A masterpiece by Igor Stravinsky and Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz, *The Soldier’s Tale* (1918) regains all its power in a production starring Lambert Wilson and the Lemanic Modern Ensemble. A performance in which music, theatre and storytelling interplay with astonishing modernity.
Written in the aftermath of the First World War, *The Soldier’s Tale* is a unique work that blends theatre, music and folk tale. Inspired by the myth of Faust, it tells the story of a soldier who trades his violin for the promise of a better future, at the risk of losing his soul. For this new interpretation, Lambert Wilson lends his voice to the narration, whilst the musicians of the Lemanic Modern Ensemble bring out the full richness of Stravinsky’s score, which blends jazz, tango, military marches and folk music. True to the spirit envisaged by the composer, this version highlights the dialogue between the actor and the musicians within a minimalist set design where every gesture contributes to the narrative. A 20th-century classic whose dramatic power, musical freedom and contemporary resonance remain intact.
