The Colour of Chance: 20 Years of Street Photography

The Friday 06 November

33 Route de Caen 14570 SAINT-REMY-SUR-ORNE

A series in constant renewal and ever-evolving, *La couleur du hasard* is the visual outcome of photographic explorations undertaken throughout France since early 2006. Sensitive to the poetry of reality, this street photography project aims to offer a colourful and contemporary portrait of individuals caught up in the flow of everyday life. It also seeks to provide a retrospective look at 20 years of daily practice in passionate and free-spirited street photography.

The two events organised during the exhibition period:

1) Screening of photographic films on Saturday 28 November at 5.00 pm
Benjamin Genissel will present a screening of two of his photographic films, which together form a diptych. Two short films composed mainly of still images.
Original music: Ludovic Hacout and Nicolas Mauduit / Editing: Virgile Guihard / Voice-over: Justine Haelters / Sound mixing: Julien Roger
– “Les lueurs de l’Ouest ordinaire” (2026, unreleased, 21 minutes): retrospective reflections on the everyday practice of photography. Featuring photographs taken exclusively in France and Europe.
– “The Light of the Distant East” (2016, 19 minutes): a photographer returning from travels in Asia shares his reflections on travel photography. Produced by AAA prod.

2) Meet the photographer Jean-Christophe Béchet on Tuesday 8 December at 6.00 pm

He is the French photographer most representative of the current street photography movement. He is the author of numerous photography books and wrote a regular column for several years in *Fisheye* magazine. He regularly runs workshops and courses to mentor photographers of all levels.
He has published a manifesto in defence of the genre: *Macadam colour street photo* (Loco, 2022). In this work, he engages in dialogue with three key figures in photography, partly concerning the advent of digital technology in the discipline, and these conversations inspired Benjamin Genissel to write his own essay.
6.00 pm: “A Brief Practical Philosophy of Street Photography”: an introductory workshop on street photography, led by Jean-Christophe Bechet. How can this photographic movement be defined? Who are its leading figures? What are the characteristics of a good street photograph? How can you get started yourself in capturing spontaneous moments in public spaces?
7.30 pm: Break with a buffet and drinks
8 pm: A discussion between Jean-Christophe Bechet and Benjamin Genissel on the future of street photography in the digital age.
