Rencontre avec la pensée de Jacques Ellul et la critique de la société technicienne

The Friday 13 November at 19 a.m00

Médiathèque de Vernon 27200 VERNON

Jacques Ellul (1912–1994), philosopher, theologian, and sociologist

Jacques Ellul’s ability to draw on philosophy, theology, legal history, and sociology enabled him to develop a critique of technology that focuses primarily on the way in which it becomes autonomous. He thus challenges the reassuring notion that technology is merely a tool that humans use to achieve their own ends. For Ellul, technology has its own ends and its own criteria; it takes on a sacred character and replaces the god of religion by assuming its attributes of omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience. Ellul thus anticipates the problems of a world governed by technology that becomes independent of humankind and reduces humans to mere instruments of its power; the development of artificial intelligence being merely the image and symptom of humanity being surpassed by its own instrument.
