"On the Sexuality of Orchids" by Sofia Teillet

Somewhere between stand-up comedy and a biology lesson, Sofia Teillet dissects the wildest courtship strategies in the plant world.
With mischievously irreverent humour and boundless curiosity, Sofia Teillet takes us on an adventure as improbable as it is fascinating: the reproduction of orchids. With the help of diagrams and a cascade of anecdotes, she unravels the most extravagant courtship strategies in the plant world. For behind their apparent elegance, orchids deploy a wealth of ingenuity to achieve their goal: to be fertilised, come what may.
But what might simply be a lesson in natural history gradually becomes a jubilant playground for the mind. From one digression to the next, the talk drifts into unexpected territory: evolution, sexuality, symbiotic relationships… and even a few absurd detours into the world of the deep-sea anglerfish or pétanque.

“On the Sexuality of Orchids” is a lecture-performance that is as funny as it is intelligent, where knowledge becomes a pretext for play, and where science, cheerfully turned on its head, becomes profoundly human.

“Everything is ‘true’ in this lecture. My research was based on scientific literature. But this is a truth of a different nature from scientific truth. It is a truth whose subjectivity I am able to claim by virtue of my status as an artist.” Sophia Teillet
