Book summary:
Norway, summer 1983. Lars grows up in the shadow of an extraordinary father: an adventurer who set sail as a teenager, a womaniser, an alcoholic, and at times violent. Regardless, Lars sees him as a force of nature and loves him unconditionally.
He is only nine years old when his father subjects him to a dangerous rite of passage to make him a man and teach him how to survive in the wilderness.
Lars has no idea of the trials that await him. Forty years later, he recounts with striking clarity that day which could have been his last.
A deeply moving coming-of-age novel in which a son’s tenderness and a father’s ferocity go hand in hand. Oktober Prize 2023
