Mémorial de Falaise 12 Place Guillaume le Conquérant 14700 FALAISE
Join us on Wednesday 9 December at the Falaise Memorial for another talk organised as part of the ‘Mercredis de l’Histoire’ series.
On the programme: “Finding food despite the odds: cooking and tips in Normandy during the war” by Christiane Dorléans and David Lecoeur, from the Monviette Nature en Pays d’Auge association
How do you put food on the table when food, fuel and energy are in short supply? Drawing on objects collected in Normandy, this talk offers a glimpse into family kitchens during the war years. A ‘Norwegian pot’, made by a family in 1943 to continue cooking food whilst saving fuel, will serve as the central theme. An old yoghurt maker will demonstrate the same ingenious principle of heat retention. Rationing, substitute products, recipes and restricted menus will show how the people of Normandy adapted their diets to cope with shortages. A story of everyday life, brought to life by the Monviette Nature en Pays-d’Auge association, where necessity, resourcefulness, family traditions and culinary heritage come together.
Christiane Dorléans, coordinator of Monviette Nature en Pays d’Auge, and David Lecoeur, historian and member of Monviette Nature.
