Le Roi se meurt

Synopsis of the play:
Is every man a sort of petty despot at the center of his own universe? Like each of us, King Bérenger is viscerally attached to life and to the world he has built around himself. But now this monarch must face the truth: the time has come. If his world is crumbling, if his kingdom is falling apart, it is because his end is near. Pushed this way and that by his two wives, baroque queens, Bérenger comes to terms with his impending demise, under the watchful eye of his inscrutable physician, his mischievous maid, and his faithful and colorful guard.

This major work of the 20th century—a tragicomic parable of rhythms and ruptures—guides us toward the inevitable. It makes us laugh at our imperfect humanity through dark and biting humor, offering, in Ionesco’s words, “a kind of liberation from our anguish.” An iconic play and a theatrical must-see.
