Forum – 2026–2027 Season | Cleophene by Crescite

Thanks to the adaptation by Angelo Jossec, director of the Crescite theatre company, the play has been renamed *Cléophène*, after the heroine of this drama, as Corneille had originally intended. *Rodogune* is a family drama of love and hate which depicts, with a dark tone but also a touch of the burlesque, the workings of revenge, jealousy and the thirst for power. When a king dies and leaves behind twin sons, which of the two heirs is the elder and must take his place? Here, Corneille deploys a formidable dramatic machinery that weaves together a series of twists and turns, culminating in a final dramatic revelation that led Stendhal to remark: “Rodogune? Shakespeare has written nothing more beautiful.”
