Exposition : Les Andelys et ses peintres
The Sunday 25 October at 14 a.m00
Musée Nicolas Poussin 27700 LES ANDELYS
Nestled in a loop of the Seine, halfway between Paris and Rouen, the town of Les Andelys has attracted many painters literally fascinated by the beauty of the place.
The site has two complementary assets, which landscape architects have seized upon:
– The meandering river, punctuated by islands and surrounded by white chalk cliffs
– The majesty of Château-Gaillard, a medieval fortress situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Seine below by almost a hundred meters.
While the river motif is conducive to the depiction of temporary phenomena (the flow of water, reflections), the silhouette of Château-Gaillard is a stable element, a sign of permanence.
The “Impressionist revolution” led to the development of plein-air painting in Normandy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Les Andelys was no exception, and the town became renowned for its artistic effervescence. A place of inspiration for many painters marked by Impressionist advances, it was represented on numerous occasions: Eugène Clary, René Sautin, Léon Coutil, Eugène Delahogue, Marthe Lucas, André Raffin, Manzana-Pissarro, Ludovic Rodo-Pissarro, Constant Moyaux, Georges Le Meilleur?
