Exhibition: "Women at war – Commitment and disillusionment" at the Falaise Memorial

The Tuesday 20 October

Mémorial de Falaise 12 place Guillaume-le-Conquérant 14700 FALAISE

From 1939 onwards, the mass mobilisation of men and the demands of total war meant that women had to take on new responsibilities in societies that had hitherto confined them mainly to the domestic sphere.

Everywhere, women took over in factories, transport and agriculture, becoming pillars of the war effort. In both Allied and Axis countries, they sometimes joined auxiliary corps or even fighting units.

In France, faced with shortages, they ensured the day-to-day survival of families. Many courageously joined the Resistance or protected Jews, risking their lives; others made choices dictated by necessity, revealing the complexity of individual paths in wartime.

Whatever form it took, the commitment of women during the war varied, but above all, their contribution was often quickly forgotten.

The aim of this new exhibition is to bring these many and often little-known women’s experiences to light, so that we can better understand the Second World War as a collective experience in which women everywhere were central players in history.
