Danse : When I saw the Sea
The Tuesday 17 November at 20 a.m00
Boulevard de Normandie Le Cadran 27000 EVREUX
Performance in Arabic, Amharic, and English with French and English subtitles
Kafala is a customary adoption process that has been abused in the Middle East, making domestic workers—who are migrant, vulnerable, and subjected to modern slavery—available to unscrupulous employers. As a result, women from Kenya, Ethiopia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka are stripped of their identity documents, then held captive and exploited.
In war-torn Lebanon, some of them were found on the Beirut Corniche, abandoned, excluded from shelters, and exposed to bombardment. Lebanese choreographer Ali Chahrour went to meet them and listen to their stories. From their accounts, *Quand j’ai vu la mer* was born.
Zena, Tenei, and Rania are the voices and bodies of these women. Syrian singer Lynn Adib and Lebanese Levantine buzuq player Abed Kobeissy accompany them. They have escaped their fate and now bring their struggle to the stage, which has become a place of protest, for the duration of a ritual, a ceremony of rebirth. Through their gestures, their words, their testimonies, and through music and song, they powerfully assert a revenge of elegant beauty.
