"n the Brain" is a longer version of "Cave," a work %AB inspired by clubbing and the nightlife scene %BB, created in 2022 for the Martha Graham Company. Here, Hofesh Shechter offers a collective brainstorming session where everyone is given a voice—or, as one might say, a gesture. The choreographer blends elements drawn from tradition and ceremony with dance styles found in contemporary clubs. The movements unique to each performer blend with those suggested to them, leading to a meeting of minds until they merge into a shared freedom.
On stage, there is a sort of blossoming in the mist. Lurking in the shadows and highlights of the subtle lighting, a latent energy is suddenly released. Individual impulses find expression there, soon joined by others in a collective fervor. From these moments emerge sequences that border on ritual and trance. A choreography rich in full and delicate movements, carried by a spellbinding musical score that flows like a rhythmic cadence. An overflowing vitality whose breath and rhythm we can sense. An urgent need to dance.
The performance is a thing of great beauty. A resounding success for the Shechter II professional development program—comprising eight dancers aged 18 to 25—supported by the Hofesh Shechter Company. They were selected from among 1,200 candidates from 49 countries, based on this piece, which was conceived for them and developed with them. Hofesh Shechter, who has left his mark on the world’s greatest dance stages for over a decade, offers them a dense and intense choreography and a magnificent opportunity to showcase their exceptional talents.
