Danse : In Satie & The Rite of Spring

The Friday 11 December at 20 a.m00

Boulevard de Normandie Le Cadran 27000 EVREUX

A dancer trained in Chinese dance troupes in Guangdong, Shanghai, and Beijing, Xie Xin came to Europe, where she notably performed in works by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Influenced by Western contemporary dance, she returned to China, where she founded the Xiexin Dance Theatre in Shanghai in 2014. An independent company that, over the course of about a decade, has made a name for itself on the global contemporary dance scene. In their new production, Xie Xin and her company present a diptych inspired by Éric Satie’s *Gymnopédies* and *Gnossiennes* and Igor Stravinsky’s *The Rite of Spring*.

While Chinese calligraphy inspired *From In*, presented at the Tangram in 2023, this time philosophy has taken center stage. %AB “Facing death to embrace life,”%BB says the choreographer. The bare stage, the simplicity of the black costumes, and the poetic, elegant movements—everything seems to serve a dance that is powerful, haunting, and hypnotic. One can discern movements drawn from classical dance, some specific to Eastern culture, and others rooted in hip-hop.

The movement may be gentle, yet the intention violent. The virtuosity is fluid; the complexity appears simple. The whole is harmonious; the dancers are fully immersed in their roles. All of them serve the liveliness of Satie’s music and then the progressive, gripping rhythm of Stravinsky’s work.
