Danse : How Romantic
The Tuesday 13 April at 20 a.m00
Boulevard de Normandie Le Cadran 27000 EVREUX
There’s a sort of frenzied marathon to the performance presented by the Franco-Greek choreographer, dancer, and musician Katerina Andreou. Born in Athens and living in France, she created this show with Carte Blanche, Norway’s National Dance Company. A dance marathon inspired by those of the 1920s in the United States, as depicted in Sydney Pollack’s cinematic masterpiece *They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?* (1969).
A long bench runs across the stage. It serves as a seat, a vantage point, or an obstacle. In turn, the dancers observe one another, size each other up, and encourage one another. Some dance, others watch, joining in the momentum, cheering on—whether as participants or witnesses to the choreography. They size each other up. They make a tentative move toward one another. The latter join the former. Solos and duets merge into a single, multifaceted ensemble. It is a race without a winner, an exploration of duality and the couple, a free interpretation of “fragments of romantic discourse.”
Romanticism here lies just beneath the skin, just beneath the gestures. A glance, a surge of emotion, an embrace. The soundscape harmonizes the bodies, as if carried by a shared sense of urgency. They push through the ordeal, the performance, with feverish energy. The result is an impression of chaos—perfectly controlled and guided by a meticulously crafted score.
