Cirque danse : Yongoyély
The Tuesday 23 March at 20 a.m00
Boulevard de Normandie Le Cadran 27000 EVREUX
Russian bars, Chinese poles, acrobatic lifts, rope, and whips—the performers of Circus Baobab (six women accompanied by two porters and one aerialist) showcase a wide range of disciplines. Acrobats and tightrope walkers, they perform traditional dances, festive street dances, and fierce krump. Lyrics and songs accompany their movements. Their strength is collective; their movements must be in unison. Their commitment is physical, but also political and social.
The %ABChinese%BB poles here are Guinean logs; whips from the countryside are repurposed as instruments of skill; and cinder blocks become a major prop in the show. They are balanced on heads, climbed upon, passed from hand to hand, and used to sketch out a makeshift structure that mocks the senseless urban sprawl of concrete.
Thus, the props serve not only for acting and acrobatics but also as a means of denouncing the oppression and abuse suffered by the people, especially women.
The title *Yongoye?ly*, meaning “exciser” in Soussou, bears witness to this. Female genital mutilation—practiced, endured, and yet still considered taboo—lies at the heart of the performance. Throughout the performance, we sense the danger of losing balance, experience moments of instability, and feel the weight of the load. The virtuosity is exceptional, the performance breathtaking, and the message comes across clearly. The circus is there, with its dazzling language in the service of a decidedly activist message.
