The Café des Tribunaux has stood on the site of the former Auberge de l?Horloge since 1810. It owes its name to the former tribunal, which was located in what is now rue Victor Hugo, in the 19th century.
The architecture of the Café des Tribunaux is typical of the regionalist style, with its picturesque decor, bell tower and clock. The current façade was restored in 1929 by architects Georges Feray and Louis Filiol. They gave the café a picturesque allure imitating the "old Norman style". This can be seen in the use of half-timbering, the wrought-iron sign, the carved barrel on the front, and the statuette of a clergyman in a niche with a barrel at his feet.
The Café des Tribunaux has been popular since the Belle Epoque. The establishment was frequented by holidaying society and artists, both French and British. Artists such as Oscar Wilde, Alfred Sickert and jacques-Emile Blanche frequented and painted here. Blanche?s paintings can be found at the Musée de Dieppe.
