Thanks to "Gone with the Wind" author Margaret Mitchell, the International Pilot Club provided Vimoutiers with funding to help rebuild the town following the bombings that took place during the Battle of Normandy.
The workers of an Ohio cheese dairy pooled their money to commission a statue of Marie Harel. They offered the statue as a gift to the town of Vimoutiers, apologising for the destruction caused by the bombings. The original Marie Harel statue had been decapitated during American bombardments in 1944.
