Imec – Abbaye d’Ardenne
An abbey for reading, writing and dreaming
The third Abbey of Caen (12th century), a historic site associated with the Battle of Normandy which has now been restored, is home to the Institut Mémoires de l’édition contemporaine (Imec). The association preserves the archives of major publishing houses and journals, as well as the manuscripts of leading writers, philosophers and artists. As a centre for research and literary creation, Imec also runs a free cultural programme throughout the year (lectures, exhibitions, events and guided tours). Its splendid abbey church, converted into a research library, has become a unique workspace open to all, subject to booking. Please note! When the warmer weather returns, the Imec opens a café renowned for its selection of products and the quality of its service, set in a majestic and inspiring setting. Opening times: Gardens and outdoor areas: Tuesday to Sunday, 2 pm to 6 pm.
Exhibitions and café: Wednesday to Sunday, 2 pm to 6 pm.
Library: Tuesday to Thursday, 9.30 am to 6 pm, and Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
Admission: Free entry.
Owned by the Regional Council and listed as a historic monument, Ardenne Abbey has been awarded the prestigious ‘Cultural Centre for Encounters’ label, which recognises historic monuments that host unique cultural projects. The Imec’s missions and activities are supported by the Ministry of Culture (Normandy Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs) and the Normandy Regional Council.
