Windsurfing, ever given it a go? Neither had we, but that was about to change! With a mix of excitement and nerves, my friends Jean, Léa, Yann-Mathis, and I suited up for our very first lesson. Our instructor, Paul, a seasoned pro, welcomed us at the Pôle Nautique Hague, one of Normandy’s top watersports hubs. Perched on the breathtaking headland of Cap de la Hague, it was the perfect place to embrace the wind, the waves, and a brand-new adventure.

Activity Overview

Mathilde and her friends share their story

The Ultimate Windsurfing Spot in Normandy

We arrived at the Pôle Nautique, eager to dive into the experience. Located in Urville-Nacqueville, just a few kilometers from Cherbourg, this hub of watersports excellence is surrounded by a region rich in discovery. Cherbourg itself, a bustling port city, offers unique attractions like the Cité de la Mer with its awe-inspiring aquariums and the renowned umbrella workshop that showcases exceptional craftsmanship.

Here at the Pôle Nautique, windsurfing isn’t just a pastime, it’s a way of life. The venue regularly hosts national competitions, drawing the best athletes from across the country. One standout moment was the 2019 French Funboard Wave Championships, where elite windsurfers, including Antoine Martin, winner of the Aloha Classic in Hawaii and ranked 4th in the world, took to the waves in a thrilling display of skill and determination. The energy of this place is electric, a true haven for anyone drawn to the wind, the waves, and the challenge of mastering them both.

A Watersports Base… Inside a Fort!

Arriving at the Pôle Nautique Hague comes with a delightful surprise—it’s located within the walls of a historic fort! This watersports centre combines state-of-the-art equipment with the character of its fortified setting, all set against the stunning backdrop of Cap de la Hague.

Our instructor, Paul, greeted us with a warm smile and quickly immersed us in the spirit of adventure. We swapped our shorts, T-shirts, and trainers for wetsuits and life jackets, preparing to take on the waves. Equipped with boards and sails tailored to our skill level, size, and the day’s wind conditions, we were soon ready to step into the sea and embrace the thrill of windsurfing in this inspiring location.

Getting the Basics Right!

It’s time to concentrate as we gather on the beach for our instructor’s briefing. Paul kicks things off by demonstrating the perfect stance on the board. I pay close attention, noting where to position my feet, how to grip the sail, and the correct way to hold my hands on the wishbone. After that, Paul explains how to lower our boards into the water with the fins. That’s step two! With the theory covered, it’s finally time to get into the water and put our newfound knowledge to the test.

Up and away in 4 minutes

“The trick is to get into the water and onto your board in four minutes,” Paul says. We hesitate for a moment. “It’s not difficult, you’ll see!” he assures us. Challenge accepted. We give it a go, and in two minutes thirty seconds, we’re in the water, on our boards, sails up, and gliding with the wind—it’s incredible! We quickly glance around at our friends, and to our delight, they’re all up and sailing too. Paul looks pleased with our progress and shouts out tips on how to stay upright as he follows us in a launch. It’s comforting to have him close by, especially when we realise just how far from the shore we’ve ventured!

Port Side, Starboard Side!

After about twenty minutes, we start to feel increasingly at ease on the water. At the very least, we’re managing to stay upright and move forward with the wind. Perhaps we’re getting a bit too comfortable, as Paul decides it’s time to bring us closer to the shore so we can continue our session. The next step is learning how to turn. While he keeps guiding us on our positioning, our instructor begins to explain the basics of maneuvering: tacking (turning into the wind) and gybing (turning away from the wind).

Eager for Round Two on the Water!

Back on the beach, we’re absolutely thrilled and won over by this sport! We head back to the Pôle Nautique Hague, where we can rinse off and change. The centre offers advanced training courses, so shall we meet up here again tomorrow and progress on our windsurfing journey ?
