Annie Crampon, a former equestrian and a passionate advocate for rural life, has brought an extraordinary idea to life: cow back rides for children. Inspired by a friend’s childhood memory of sitting on cows during milking time, she transformed this nostalgic spark into an unforgettable adventure. Nestled in the heart of Suisse Normande, Annie’s innovative experience combines a deep love for animals with a sense of wonder, inviting families to slow down and connect with nature. Ready for a slow moo-tion ride?

Annie Crampon, Manager of 4 Pat’Balade
With qualifications as an Equestrian Tourism Guide (ATE) and a Professional Youth and Sports Certificate (BPJEPS in equestrian tourism), Annie is no stranger to outdoor activities. But cows? That’s a whole new level of creativity. Through her company, 4 Pat’Balade, she introduces young adventurers to the joys of cowback riding, an activity both unconventional and utterly enchanting. She is deeply committed to the 8 cows she has adopted, shining a light on local bovine breeds and celebrating their significance in Normandy’s rural heritage.
Holy Cow!

The day begins in the picturesque Forêt-Auvray, overlooking the lush Orne Valley. Two eager riders, five-year-olds Charline and Lennon, spot their companions grazing peacefully in the distance. Annie introduces the children to their mounts with warmth and care. Charline meets Meuline, a cuddly Norman cow with white and brown patches—and markings around her eyes that look like glasses! Lennon, on the other hand, is paired with Linotte, a caramel-coloured Jersey cow. “These cows are incredibly gentle,” Annie reassures, as she guides the children through the first steps of bonding: brushing. “They love a good scratch,” she says with a smile. This hands-on experience quickly sparks affection and curiosity, creating a special connection between the little riders and their bovine friends. With saddles secured and helmets on, the children climb aboard their surprisingly sturdy mounts, ready to explore.
A Stroll Through Nature

Under a glorious blue sky, the group sets off along the GR®36 hiking trail. Shaded woodland paths and rolling countryside unfold before them, creating a stunning backdrop as parents walk alongside their children, perched atop their gentle 1.5-metre-high companions. Unlike horses, which tend to adapt to their rider’s pace, the cows set their own rhythm, choosing a pace that Annie describes as “between slow and very slow.” The ride is serene and peaceful, offering riders a chance to unwind and fully immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of Suisse Normande.
A Sweet Treat at Bagot’s Ranch

The adventure doesn’t end with the ride. As the group reaches Bagot’s Ranch, they’re greeted by Martine, a friendly local who runs a charming farm shop nearby. Around a rustic outdoor table, everyone gathers to enjoy “Holla’s Snack,” named after the very first cow Annie trained for this extraordinary activity. Freshly made crêpes and artisanal jams steal the show, with the children savouring every bite before discovering the farm’s animals. This final stop is a heartwarming conclusion to a day that blends discovery, laughter, and a genuine connection with nature.
