Cycling through an Impressionist painting along the Seine
Whether you’re a passionate art aficionado or a casual admirer, spending 24 hours in Giverny offers a unique blend of culture and tranquility. This picturesque village in the Seine Valley, where Impressionist masters once set up their easels, is the perfect place to understand what inspired their groundbreaking work. Claude Monet, a key figure in the movement, transformed the art world by painting outdoors to capture the shifting light and colours of nature. During our visit, the sky’s vivid hues and the landscape’s changing tones brought the essence of Impressionism to life, deepening our appreciation for the beauty that fueled these iconic artists.

Chloe greets us warmly at the Vernon-Giverny train station (just an hour’s journey from Paris). Without wasting a moment, we hop onto our bikes and set off. Time to kick-start our two-wheeled adventure.
Crossing an old stone bridge, we pedal towards our first heritage stop: the Old Mill of Vernon. With its charming half-timbered structure suspended above the gently flowing Seine, it feels like stepping back into another era. This picturesque mill, a beloved subject for many Impressionist painters, is just a prelude to the sights ahead. We continue our journey past the impressive Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, its grand spire rising against the sky.
Cycling along the dedicated Greenway, the landscape shifts to rolling fields and quiet country roads, drawing us closer to the heart of Giverny. Along the way, our guide Chloe keeps us captivated, weaving local legends, hidden histories, and personal anecdotes with an infectious passion. Born and raised in this scenic corner of Normandy, she’s on a mission to show us the region beyond its postcards, adding layers of meaning to every view.
In the footsteps of Claude Monet
We’ve made it to Giverny! Pedaling along the charming Rue Claude Monet (naturally!), we’re instantly swept up in the village’s artistic spirit. The street is alive with colorful façades, lined with quaint art studios and galleries, inviting us to pause and explore. Our journey through this corner of the Eure unfolds with several cultural stops, each deepening our connection to the world of the Impressionists.
We begin with a quiet moment at Claude Monet‘s grave in the churchyard, paying our respects to the master who forever changed the course of art history. Then, we’re off to the Ancien Hôtel Baud, a place teeming with history. It was here that the likes of Renoir, Rodin, Sisley, Pissarro, and many American artists found inspiration and camaraderie. Chloe guides us inside the restaurant at Hôtel Baudy. We step through its doors and are discover a perfectly preserved artist’s studio from 1887, complete with original easels, palettes, and brushes. The atmosphere is so authentic, it feels as if one of the great masters might walk in at any moment, ready to bring a fresh canvas to life.

Our guide’s deep passion for Giverny and its history truly brings Impressionism to life. “Monet lived here from 1883 until 1926,” she tells us, “spending 43 years—nearly half his life—in this idyllic setting. It was here that he gained fame for the countless masterpieces depicting his water lily garden, complete with the iconic Japanese bridge.” Hearing this, we can hardly wait to explore the artist’s sanctuary ourselves.
And we’re in luck! Our next stop on this cycling adventure is none other than the renowned Monet House and Gardens, one of France’s most spectacular gardens. Now known as the Monet Foundation, this vibrant oasis brims with the very colours and scenes that inspired the great painter. Time to see for ourselves the world that Monet so beautifully immortalised on canvas.
A Living Canvas: Monet’s Enchanted Garden

Monet, the undisputed master of Impressionism, was captivated by nature’s ever-changing moods and dedicated himself to capturing the same scenes across different seasons. His garden, a living testament to this vision, transforms dramatically from spring to autumn. As Chloe explains, “each season has its signature blooms. Right now, we’re at the tail end of tulip season, with nearly 200 varieties in full display. Next up are daffodils, dahlias, and the famed water lilies.” The gardeners face quite the challenge maintaining this dynamic, flourishing haven! We’re already making plans to return in autumn to witness the vibrant palette of reds, oranges, and golds in full glory.
Nothing quite matches the enchantment of stepping into Claude Monet’s house, with its iconic green shutters, where every room offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of the artist. It’s a journey into the past that brings you closer to understanding the man behind the masterpieces, a truly captivating experience.
Staying overnight in Giverny, we checked in at La Musardière, a delightful 3-star hotel known for its “bistronomic” restaurant showcasing inventive dishes crafted from local ingredients. This is where we bid farewell to Chloe, thanking her for a day filled with fascinating insights and stories. Giverny truly is the perfect gateway for an Impressionist-inspired journey through Normandy, and our adventure is far from over. For now, it’s time to unwind, savor the flavors of the region, and gear up for the discoveries awaiting us tomorrow.
