On the dawn of June 6, 1944, the skies over Normandy erupted in a cacophony of destruction as Allied forces launched extensive bombardments on key urban centres. In Caen, the heart of the city was left in ruins, reduced to rubble as the Allies executed a strategic mission to obliterate communication networks and impede the flow of German reinforcements. By the morning of June 7, several towns in Lower Normandy, including Caen, Lisieux, Coutances, Saint-Lô, and Vire, had been effectively erased from the map, marking a grim prelude to the fierce fighting that would ensue in the days ahead. This aerial assault underscored the Allies’ resolve to dismantle German defensive capabilities, even at the cost of civilian infrastructure and lives.
Six weeks of fighting…
In June 1944, Caen and its Carpiquet aerodrome became prime targets for RAF aviators. The city, strategically located, held significant importance in the fight for the liberation of Normandy. Unfortunately, this interest translated into intensified bombardments, plunging the local population into a nightmare. To escape the impending destruction, many residents were forced to flee their homes, leaving behind the remnants of a life engulfed in chaos.

However, the Germans still hold the right bank, and it is not until July 19 that the final districts, such as Vaucelles, will be liberated. It is only on the morning of July 9, a month after the D-Day landings, that Caen is freed by the Canadians advancing from Saint-Germain-la-Blanche-Herbe. The British, meanwhile, enter from the east, navigating through the ruins.
