MONTFORT-SUR-RISLE

National Forest of Montfort-sur-Risle

In the northwest of the Eure, in the Risle valley, visit a surprising forest mostly planted with resinous trees. An important biodiversity, an ideal place for the whole family to relax and get some fresh air: the forest of Montfort forms a precious nature haven. The forest stand is as diverse as unusual. There, you will see Scots pines, sessile and pedunculate oaks, beeches, etc. A diversity of plants and animals also live there: wild boars, hares, dragonflies, amphibians, etc. as well as the European nightjar, a crepuscular bird which is dependent on this habitat. Several trails are available for walks and hikes, including a 2.7 km (1.6 mile) discovery trail (leaving from the Cateliers Rest area) which displays the wealth and diversity of fauna and flora in this environment. This forest, which covers 2,042 ha on the right bank of the river Risle, also features beautiful groves of tall pine trees that are 80 to 120 years old. Be careful, before you leave, check the hunting season dates on the website of the French National Forest Office (www.onf.fr/enforet/montfort).
