William the Conqueror's Castle

Chateaux

"Château Guillaume le Conquérant": a unique historic experience awaits you in Falaise.
Born in Falaise in 1027, William accomplished his very first feat of arms within this castle. He was fifteen years old. His victory was the first act to seal his power over Normandy. His epic adventure was to guide his path as far as England, where he was crowned king.
The keeps of Falaise Castle bear witness to his conquest that was to profoundly modify the course of European history.
These palace-keeps, which served equally as defensive refuges and seigniorial residencies, left a lasting mark on this new territory.
The model was developed until the year 1204, later to be replaced by a new form of architecture that symbolised the power asserted by the King of France, the territory's new and unquestionable master.
Today, the context of this long history steeped in subsequent conquests, alliances, times of trouble and of prosperity, is illustrated by new technologies that plunge the visitor, via augmented reality, into the day-to-day life of a duke or a king and his sumptuous and colourful furnishings.
The touch-screen tablet computers provided at the start of the visit offer a recreational and fascinating discovery of the keeps' interiors via virtual reconstitution. The tour is enhanced with image projections, accounts and background sounds.
Also, at the park entrance, a film presents the evolution of these fortifications and castle buildings over the past 1,000 years, whilst binoculars offer stereoscopic superimposed past and present images of the lower courtyard, rendering viewpoints that can no longer be appreciated today.
A historic experience that plunges visitors into the intimacy of the major figures that have left their indelible mark on this formidable fortification.
