LA HAGUE

Vauville botanical garden

Parks and gardens

Outstanding. This botanical garden, laid out in 1947, contains more than 1 200 species from the southern hemisphere, creating a sub-tropical atmosphere around the Château de Vauville. It takes advantage of the site’s natural terrain, with evergreen trees and shrubs providing permanent structure. Although the site is a windy one, many species from around the world thrive in the Vauville botanical garden. The hardiest shrubs are planted in clumps to act as wind-breaks. The Gulf stream warms this north-west side of La Hague, creating a climate in which plants not normally to be found in Normandy can feel at home. This is more than just a botanical garden: the succession of garden rooms forms a most striking setting for the Château de Vauville.
