Tapisserie de Bayeux

Museums

Listed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, the Bayeux Tapestry is an invaluable record of the conquest of the throne of England by William the Conqueror. Probably ordered by Odon de Bayeux, William’s half-brother, and made in the years following the conquest, this 70-metre-long and 50cm high embroidery shows the clothes, the castles, the ships and the conditions of life in the 11th century.

The Bayeux Tapestry is a unique, exceptional 11th century masterpiece that has been listed on the Unesco Memory of the World register since 2007. The tapestry is nearly 70 meters long and depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy, in 1066. The tapestry features over 600 embroidered characters, 200 horses, some forty ships and several hundred animals and figures from mythology. The tapestry was hidden numerous times to save it from destruction and still has plenty of secrets to reveal, 900 years after its creation.
