Souterroscope is a unique slates mine which still maintains the workings from the 19th century. As the visitor goes deeper and deeper underground they discover in turn the ‘Lac des Merveilles’ or groundwater lake with an audio visual display about the water cycle, then the spooky dragon’s cave and the chasm with its sunken arch, worn away by the very early miners who worked right at the bottom of the mine. All of the techniques are explained in one of the largest chambers of the mine by an audio visual display enhanced by geologists. A must see is the treasure trove of giant crystals - semi precious stones which take us into another world. This is a very unusual type of visit -both exciting and strange and gives us a marvellous insight into the underground world. Restaurant on site.
