DOUDEVILLE

Park of the Château de Galleville

Parks and gardens

The Château de Galleville was built in 1678 for M.Roque de Varangeville, one of Louis XIV’s counsellors and his ambassador to Venice. The estate passed to his daughter, the Maréchale de Villars, who sold it in 1769 to the family whose descendants are the present owners. Around this remarkable architectural ensemble, the gardens (a plan of which exists, dated 1743) are laid out as a park with elegant vistas in the classical style, surrounded by centuries-old beech trees. Visitors make their way down the avenues of lime trees and long pergolas of neatly trimmed hornbeam which border the lawns, towards the huge garden garden filled with rare flowers and shrubs, and then on to the pretty potager.
