VERNEUIL D'AVRE ET D'ITON

Abbey of Saint-Nicolas

Religious buildings

Located in the old part of Verneuil-sur-Avre, Saint Nicolas' Abbey was founded in 1627 for Benedictine nuns. Among the Norman Abbeys, the one in Verneuil is one of the rare ones to be still standing at its original location. Monastic life came to a stop in 2001. The monastic buildings form a quadrangle adjoining Saint Nicolas' Church. Towards the countryside, the grounds are bordered by former ditches and a part of the former fortification wall that used to surround the fortified town in the 12th century.
