Located in the heart of Cherbourg close to the city center in a barracks in the late eighteenth century, contemporary with the installation of the Navy in the Cotentin, the Defence Historical Service has a reading room of twenty squares, plus a side room of three microfilm readers. Besides the rich fund of marine works, which help to retrace the history of all infrastructure related to the implementation of the Navy in Cherbourg and the region (large offshore breakwater, arsenal, port basins, barracks, administrative buildings , strong), those in the maritime prefecture or shipbuilding, including the service retains the maritime registration archives of the coastal region from Dunkirk to Mont Saint-Michel, (except districts of Rouen, Le Havre , Honfleur and Caen). His library, which has at present nearly thirty thousand volumes, is particularly rich in maritime history and travelogues, even if the other fields of historical research are not absent: military history, law, science natural, etc. It continues to grow steadily. Reference library, it nevertheless maintained the tradition of free home loan. In the prospects for enlargement of its activities, the service has also resolutely opened in recent years to genealogy.
